Mudskipper Mates
Location: Bat Cave Hong, Koh Penak, Phang Nga Bay, Thailand
One of my first biology lessons was the Gobi’s of Corona Del Mar cove in Newport Beach. Capable of living out of water and smart enough to have personalities, we collected Gobi’s, take then to our beach house for an overnight stay, and returned them to the cove the next day. That was 1950 – now we know it’s not cool to disturb any wildlife, but I did learn lessons that still apply today. Gobi's are the largest family of fish, with about 4,000 of the 16,000 Pisces species. Members of the Gobi family, Mudskippers range through the tropical seashores of the Old World, Western Pacific, SE Asia, India and Africa. Going back 360 million years, their ancestors make claim to being the first vertebrates to crawl from the sea and come onto land. That's why we call them the "Evolution fish". Join us in the Bat Cave Hong, where we explain their natural history as they frolic in the mud flats right before your eyes.
